Sheriff Kicks As Makarfi Takes Over PDP


The caretaker committee led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi formally took over the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday. But the party’s former national chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has insisted that he remains the true chairman of the party until the courts say otherwise. The party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) and the former National Working Committee (NWC) formally handed the mantle of leadership to the caretaker committee. While Sen. Walid Jubrin represented the BoT as chairman, former deputy national chairman, Uche Secondus, represented the former NWC. Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff was absent as he was reportedly out of the country. Sen. Makarfi’s assumption of office followed a meeting of all organs of the PDP which stretched late into Monday night. Sheriff was also absent at that meeting. Speaking with newsmen after that meeting, Makarfi affirmed that he was fully in charge of the party, and said he would strive to assuage all aggrieved members of the party.
